AquaSol performed services under contract with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Chemonics Corporation, and a local Ugandan investor to deliver an in-depth feasibility study for a proposed large-scale commercial Tilapia cage culture project in Lake Victoria. Key components of the study included an exhaustives search of Lake Victoria for sites suitable for commercial cage culture of Tilapias, site search for suitable land-based locations for fish hatchery development, aquaculture site analysis of the highest potential sites, an assessment of both traditional and fish farming infrastructure in Uganda, an environmental impact study, a social impact study, development of commercial production protocols, delivery of an European Union (EU) seafood market analysis and development of a strategic marketing plan, and delivery of a bankable financial feasibility analysis.
Subsequent to our efforts to identify the best sites and methods for aquaculture development in Uganda, a large-scale commercial Tilapia farming project called Source of the Nile (SON) was developed on a Lake Victoria seashore site near Jinja, Uganda. The industry is growing due in large part to the efforts of SON but investment is still lacking, especially in the development of high quality fish feeds.
